The Home Office received 63,872 applications from EU nationals in the year ending March 31, a 45 per cent increase on the previous year. About 5.4 million EU citizens have applied for the right to stay in the UK under a scheme that closes at the end of next month. Overall, the UK received 176,910 applications for citizenship in the 12 months to March this year, 7 per cent higher than the previous year.
