There are far fewer of them (I should say us, as I've been self-employed for a very long time), and many are doing badly regarding health insurance and retirement. One was small business owners with significant business income and/or expenses (neither over $10 million a year). The share of small business owners has been "essentially unchanged" during that period. Only 8 percent of primarily self-employed people made retirement contributions. About 13 percent of the primarily self-employed people in the above wage range purchased health insurance (not counting dependents or non-working spouses) through Affordable Care Act marketplaces.
