Settlement Cash Used to Create Trauma-Focused Center in Harlem

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said his office would make a multimillion-dollar grant to create a trauma-focused therapy center in Harlem to help residents avoid succumbing to the cyclical violence that can perpetuate crime and incarceration. Years of research conducted by the office determined trauma was often at the heart of community violence and that the populations at the highest risk had insufficient access to support services, Mr. Vance said. The $8 million grant will fund a first-of-its-kind Center for Trauma Innovation, offering clinical and nontraditional trauma therapies. The money will be allocated over 4½ years to Exodus Transitional Community, a community-based organization with roots in Upper Manhattan. “Hurt people can hurt other people,” said Mr. Vance.
