Shades of Rip Van Winkle: Govt calls for Lokpal after 5yrs silence

The advertisement, placed on the website of the department of personnel and training (DoPT) on behalf of the search committee for the Lokpal, has set February 22 as the last date for sending in applications. According to the Lokpal law, enacted in January 2014, the selection committee, headed by the Prime Minister, will select the ombudsman from the panel of names recommended by the search committee. The eight-member search committee had been set up — again with the Supreme Court’s prodding — on September 27 last year. Despite its anti-corruption rhetoric, the Modi government has dragged its feet on the appointment of the Lokpal from the very beginning. According to the Lokpal law, the selection committee should include the leader of the Opposition.
