Flanagan, 36, is an Olympic silver medalist on the track but had yet to win a major marathon in her career. She is the first U.S. woman to win the race since Miki Gorman in 1977, and the first American woman to win a major marathon since 2006, pulling away over the final five miles in Manhattan to break the tape in 2 hours, 26 minutes and 53 seconds.
