Edward Bramson, whose activist fund Sherborne has waged a three-year campaign to bring change at Barclays, has sold a 6 per cent stake in the bank, marking a victory for Jes Staley, the lender’s chief executive. For the just over five years that Staley has run Barclays, there have been dramas dating back to past times, including criminal trials over the bank’s 2008 Middle East fundraising; gaffes, including Staley being fooled by a prankster into believing that he was emailing the bank’s chairman; and serious questions over both Staley’s behaviour towards an anonymous whistleblower and his links to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender.
