NZME reports Shortland Street's casting director Andrea Kelland is recruiting an infant of "mixed African and European descent" to convincingly play the offspring of ambulance driver husband Ali Karim's (played by Tane Williams-Accra​) and his wife, nurse Lucy Rickman (played by Grace Palmer), who is pregnant. She told NZME the baby would be introduced to one of its on-screen parents at a time, before doing a single take. "We try to keep the baby's exposure to being on set to a minimum."
