(Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The last time Trea Turner wasn’t considered a shortstop entering a baseball season, he was a 5-foot-4, 100-pound freshman on the Park Vista Community High School junior varsity baseball team. He was the left fielder, and only played shortstop when the starting shortstop pitched. Turner then became the starting JV shortstop as a sophomore and won the job on the varsity team as a junior. Speier was a young starting shortstop on a contending team himself when he broke into the majors at 21 with the San Francisco Giants in 1971. But offense isn’t the question for Turner, whose $554,900 salary this season makes him one of the best bargains in baseball.
