Slow business at big market

FOR a market that serves the most densely populated suburb on Penang island, the Paya Terubong market complex leaves much to be desired. Paya Terubong resident Fatimah Mohamed Yusoff, 54, feels that the lukewarm reception to the market in her own neighbourhood is because residents still prefer the decades-old Ayer Itam Market. She stays opposite Paya Terubong Market, but she still goes to the Ayer Itam Market about 2km away. “It is definitely cheaper there and there many types of fish, prawns and vegetables,” said the kindergarten teacher, who stays at the flats opposite the Paya Terubong Market. “People are still afraid of crowds and even the Ayer Itam Market has fewer customers compared with previous days due to Covid-19,” he said.
