COVERED IN HAZE Smog blankets parts of Metro Manila as seen from a spot in Antipolo City on June 29 2021. PHOTO BY JOHN ORVEN VERDOTETHE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Tuesday clarified that the haze over Metro Manila was not caused by smog coming from Taal Volcano but from pollution. Interviewed by The Manila Times, Phivolcs chief Renato Solidum said the smog was a result of "human activities like pollution coming from vehicles". On Monday, Phivolcs cautioned the public, especially those living near the Taal Volcano Island (TVI), after the volcano emitted smog as high as three-kilometers. It reiterated that Alert Level 2 stays over Taal Volcano as sudden steam or gas-driven explosions are possible.
