South Africa Moves to Secure Nuclear Isotope Supply With New Research Reactor

The plan was outlined by Loyiso Tyabashe, chief executive of the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA), in an interview with Reuters reported on March 24. The facility will be designed as a multipurpose research reactor and will not be used for electricity generation. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regularly ranks South Africa among the world’s leading producers of Mo-99, largely due to the Safari-1 reactor. The project forms part of a broader effort to revive the nuclear sector in South Africa, which also includes plans to develop small modular reactors (SMRs). South Africa remains the only country on the continent with an operational commercial nuclear power plant.
