South Asia slowly emerging as coronavirus hotspot


The eight South Asian nations — India, Pakistan, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan — account for 7.4% of the world total of 7,896,476 coronavirus cases. In terms of fatalities, South Asia total is 3% of the total of 432,888 people who have died of the infection worldwide, according to data by Worldometers. Collectively, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan account for 94% of total cases reported in South Asia, the data showed. The official numbers still show India, Pakistan and Bangladesh with the third, seventh and tenth most new cases in the world over the past three days, respectively. Bhutan, the tiny South Asian nation, has successfully averted the Covid-19 crisis with no reported coronavirus related fatalities.
