SI appears to be gone and the LA Times is headed in that direction. The Times disclosed Thursday that substantial layoffs were coming due to a widening budget deficit. There’s lots of questions here, but smack in the middle of the mess are union seniority and DEI. Managers have told the staff that relaxing seniority rules in the contract would save 50 newsroom jobs out of an undisclosed number. The union needs to understand the LA Times is on the verge of going broke.
