These problems are; a shortage of signal operators, the non-payment of salaries to retired signalmen recalled for duties, and the dearth of junior staff including announcers, sanitation workers, and non-permanent workers. At present, station masters are covering up the duties of signal operators due to a shortage of signal operators, according to the Sri Lanka Station Masters’ Union (SLSMU). “We also need at least 100 non-permanent staff,” Somaratne further added.
