Eye-care tactic is out of focus, Editorial, Aug. 13The Star’s editorial says the Ontario optometrists’ campaign to obtain a more equitable rate of compensation from the province is a “selfish and dangerous tactic focused on the wrong people.”That’s an understandable position to take. However, looking back at job actions over the years by Ontario’s school teachers, I see that, although the issue is between the teachers and the government, it is the students who are disadvantaged. They have their education curtailed, related activities such as parent-teacher conferences cancelled, report cards withheld and exams put in jeopardy. Yet the Star supports the teachers in their never-ending quest for more money. Why is it OK for teachers’ actions to affect students but not OK for optometrists to affect patients?
