Governors from both political parties have prioritized the issue of reading instruction in their annual state of the state speeches, and that’s a cause for celebration. At a time of political polarization and noise in our country, reading instruction is breaking through as a priority in some state capitals. At the meeting, many of our nation’s state education chiefs came together in Washington, D.C., to take collective action to address literacy in a way that’s grounded in research. We know that state leadership is key to jump-starting much-needed improvements to reading instruction in our nation’s schools, so having governors on board is critical. “We must identify students who are struggling and get them the help they need,” Dunleavy said during his state of the state address.
