State begins to move its servers into government data centre

The construction of the data centre, which was partly funded with EU money, was finished in the middle of last year. “The government data centre will then be operationally open and public-service organisations will begin transitioning their ICT infrastructure and services to data centre throughout 2026 and into 2027.”The 4MW facility is replacing several smaller data centres that are deemed no longer fit for purpose. Before the data centre went to tender, however, the Department of Public Expenditure was told by the Office of Public Works (OPW) the estimate had reached €80m. The data centre is expected to be connected eventually to a solar farm, which will allow it to use renewable energy. It is intended that excess energy from the data centre will eventually power the entire campus, through the development of a district heating scheme.
