The Arizona Governor's Office of Resiliency and Office of Tribal Relations announced Monday that the State of Arizona, Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe were the recipients of a nearly $100,000 grant from the Resilient Energy Economies (REE) initiative. The grant will go toward a joint research project called Enhancing Four Corners Economic Resilience and Tribal Sovereignty to support coal-impacted communities in the Four Corners region. The project aims to create new opportunities for job creation and revenue growth in the region. Together, the partnership will seek to identify plans for state-tribal cooperation to support communities facing the ongoing impacts of the coal industry's decline. The closure of the Navajo Generating Station and Kayenta Mine led to $50 million in annual revenue losses, 700 direct job losses and 3,000 indirect job losses for the Navajo Nation.
