They were speaking amid the continued fallout from this week’s European Super League announcement that would have seen a number of clubs across Europe breakaway to form their own competition. The proposals effectively collapsed after the six English teams that were set to be involved pulled out amid outrage from fans. Mr Rotheram and Mr Burnham have now launched the Reclaim Our Game campaign for an overhaul of how football in the UK is structured. Mr Rotheram said the “farcical” situation that unfolded in recent days was symptomatic of a system that has long been heavily weighted against football fans in favour of profit.
