Stewart Island's young leaders get funding boostJo Learmonth National MP Sarah Dowie said it can be difficult for young people living in offshore communities to get the same opportunities as those who are in bigger population centres. Young Stewart Island leaders are set to receive government funding to provide increased opportunities to development their skills. Halfmoon Bay School on Stewart Island, together with Kaitoki School on Great Barrier Island, will receive $5000 as part of an initiative to help foster young leaders living in offshore communities. "It can be difficult for young people living in offshore communities to access the same opportunities as other youths living in larger centres. "However, the Government recognises that tomorrow's leaders and achievers are just as likely to come from our offshore communities as our bigger towns and cities."
