Stock market accounts expanded by 13.7 percent to almost 1.4 million last year, with online accounts making up 67 percent of the total, a report from the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) showed. The latest Stock Market Investor Profile (SMIP) reported that total stock market accounts reached 1,396,753 in 2020, up from 1,228,038 in 2019. Retail accounts still led the total at 97.9 percent or 1,366,855, while institutional accounts comprised the remaining 2.1 percent or 29,898. Monzon added that there was a 35.6-percent increase in the number of active accounts last year as the pandemic prompted retail investors to participate in the stock market. Domestic investors, on the other hand, had a 98.3 percent share of stock market accounts, while investors based overseas made up the remaining 1.7 percent of shares.
