Drag provides a sense of community and creative space for members of the LGBTQIA+ community to express themselves and engenders a sense of empowerment among individuals who share similar backgrounds and beliefs. Lawmakers in several states have drafted—and in many cases, passed—legislation to prevent minors from interacting with drag performers. Pushback on drag shows exerts a negative effect on LGBTQIA+ community members who already face interpersonal prejudice and stigma on the basis of their identity. Unique challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community manifest in the field of medicine as well.
