Traffic in and out of Etobicoke’s Ontario Food Terminal was slower than usual Tuesday as employees of Ippolito Produce went on strike. A memo by the Ontario Food Terminal Board details the agreed upon picket protocol: at the Queensway Entrance, every fifth vehicle is stopped for two minutes, unless there are less than five vehicles in the line-up, at which point the pickets can stop every vehicle for two minutes. The 12 workers with Fresh Taste who went on strike are Tibetan, almost all of them refugees, and it was their first time joining a union. A study published around the same time as the Fresh Taste strike last year detailed the challenges facing Chinese restaurant workers, a struggle which is echoed in other areas of food production, including produce. It’s uncertain right now how long this strike will last, but Dean is feeling positive.
