Specifically, we present a quantitative estimation of Saharan dust deposition rates that occurred in southwestern continental Europe (43°N), a region located >2000 km north of Saharan dust sources. Saharan dust fluxes show strong interannual and interdecadal variability ( 7 ), both of which influence and are affected by a multitude of regional-scale processes. These intermediate values are broadly consistent with the distance to the main Saharan dust plume and present-day dust rates ( 32 ). Also, the absolute values of dust fluxes are concordant with the distance of the sampling sites to dust sources and pathways. During the AHP, Saharan dust fluxes probably reached the minimum values for the whole Holocene ( 13 , 31 ).
