Study highlights potential 20 per cent output reduction due to worker unrest

Conducted across 102 garment factories with over 3,000 production lines, a recent study presented at the annual Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) conference reveals that worker unrest can cause a substantial 20 per cent decline in productivity, persisting for at least six months. Dhaka University economics professor Atonu Rabbani, presenting the study titled Examining productivity within the Bangladeshi RMG sector: Dispersion, determinants and gender advancement, explained that terminations resulting from unrest have a lasting impact on productivity. The research also exposes an opportunity for improvement by training workers on lagging production lines, potentially boosting productivity by up to 50 per cent. Additionally, the study highlights the under-representation of women in supervisory roles, challenging the misconception that women lack technical expertise and emphasizing the potential for skill acquisition through proper training.
