A few years after Sun Life took over MetLife’s Canadian life insurance policies, the two companies were in court. The allegations concern more than 230,000 life insurance policies sold to Canadians between 1985 and 1998. Had customers not been misled as to how the plans worked, they could have purchased different insurance policies, according to the customers’ allegations in court filings. For lawyers representing Sun Life customers, the evidence the insurance company had submitted in its fight against MetLife was a smoking gun. The appeal court said customers could pursue their own individual lawsuits claiming agents misrepresented how the policies worked.
