It’s the little film that could, or never dreamed it would. For Sama, a tiny and harrowing no-budget Syrian war documentary, shot during the siege of Aleppo, has been nominated for four Baftas, putting it on level pegging with the Elton John biopic Rocketman and the highly anticipated South Korean thriller Parasite, and just one nod below awards season favourites Little Women and Marriage Story (both on five). The film, which was co-directed by Edward Watts and Waad Al-Kateab, and shepherded into production by Channel 4 News, was nominated in categories including outstanding british film and best foreign film.
