For the first time, a deceased person appears on the cover of TIME's Person of the Year issue: Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post columnist described by the magazine's Karl Vick as "the stout man with the gray goatee and the gentle demeanor (who) dared to disagree with his country's government. He told the truth about its brutality toward those who would speak out. One of the journalists honored with a Person of the Year cover is Maria Ressa, who runs Rappler, an online news site in the Philippines. As TIME's POY piece puts it: journalists haven't been working harder, they've just been working in an environment where truth itself has become open to debate. "For the first time in living memory, an element of personal danger has entered coverage of public affairs in America."
