TSMC apparently plans to significantly upgrade its Japanese operations and also manufacture 3 nm chips in the region in the future. Specifically, this concerns Kumamoto Fab 2, whose role has changed significantly following a meeting between TSMC CEO C.C. For Japan, this is an industrial policy coup; for TSMC, it is a calculated step toward risk diversification. TSMC is unlikely to be interested in handing Japan over to a potential rival without a fight. The increasing tensions surrounding Taiwan are forcing TSMC to duplicate critical manufacturing capacity outside the island.
