TV’s Peaky Blinders fail in whiskey brand case

The company that produces the UK series Peaky Blinders, which stars Cork’s Cillian Murphy, can’t block the maker of a similarly named Irish whiskey brand from using its name, for now, a Los Angeles court has ruled. US District Judge Consuelo B. Marshall rejected Caryn Mandabach Productions application for a preliminary injunction against Sadler’s Brewhouse, which owns the Irish whiskey brand Peaky Blinder. Sadler’s previously said it used the Peaky Blinder name because of its historical connections to the Peaky Blinders gang, which the show is also named after. This was partly because its use of Peaky Blinders is “likely descriptive or suggestive of a television show”. Sadler’s and Halewood sources the liquid for its Irish whiskey brand from Great Northern Distillery.
