A Brampton woman who was at the centre of a legal challenge over the definition of death has died in hospital after having been on life support since September 2017. Her family says the Toronto-area woman’s heart stopped beating on Monday, rendering her dead in their view. The family has argued her Christianity belief recognizes death as when the heart stops beating. McKitty “sought to have her religious beliefs about the moment of death taken into account as part of the legal determination of her death. Those beliefs, like for many Orthodox Jews, Muslims and some Christians, does not recognize neurological death as death,” Stewart maintained in the statement.
