Taranaki rescue squad wins award for saving four teenagers

(file photo)A risky water rescue battling fading light, sharp rocks and strong currents to save four people has won a Taranaki team of surf lifesavers a national award. The Todd Energy Surf Lifesaving Rescue Squad won the BP rescue of the month for the dramatic rescue of four teenage girls from Pararaki Rock at New Plymouth’s Back Beach on January 5. Squad members Scott Nelson and Richard Matheson ferried the girls, two at a time, to the beach in the IRB. BP's head of country Matt Elliott said the company was proud to have been supporting surf lifesaving teams and in partnership with Surf Life Saving New Zealand for 53 years.
