Children should learn coding from the age of two to capture their interest before stereotypes take hold, according to one of Britain’s computing pioneers. Dame Stephanie Shirley, who started the software company Freelance Programmers in 1962, said that engaging very young children could get them hooked on problem-solving before they learn of the “male geek”. She said the evidence indicated that the best age for children to start simple coding activities was between two and seven years. “I don’t think you can start too early,” she added. “Most successful later coders start between five and six.
