Ireland’s biggest tech retailers are misleading shoppers with exaggerated ‘Black Friday’ discount claims, according to an Irish Independent survey analysis of ‘before and after’ pricing. The misleading sale claims also apply to prices that are outside Black Friday campaigns but still styled as discounted items. In other cases, retailers are quoting obsolete ‘recommended retail prices’ (RRP) prices to try to persuade shoppers that they’re getting a discounted deal. A spokesperson for Harvey Norman said that stated savings were related to RRP prices rather than pre-sale prices. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission said while misleading price practices are outlawed by the Consumer Protection Act of 2007, enforcement is rare.
