Tech vs. Consumer -- Where Companies Are Based and Why It Matters

It’s no secret that U.S. tech companies tend to cluster in major cities. We used our machine learning platform Helio to gather headquarter locations for nearly 700,000 consumer companies throughout the U.S. and compared that to over 170,000 tech companies using data from Crunchbase’s Open Data Map. If we were to take into account branches and stores, the distribution of consumer companies would be even higher. Similarly, the top 25 cities for tech are home to 46.6% of companies compared to 20.4% for consumer. If these consumer companies continue to be overlooked, there will be a much harder path to create and innovate for entrepreneurs.
