A furious row erupted after the claims were made about a Panorama programme broadcast last year. An internal memo said it had spliced together two sections of President Trump’s speech to supporters shortly before the January 6 riots to give a misleading impression of what he actually said. However, Trump actually said he would walk with them “to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard”. Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr, has branded the BBC “full of shit” over the controversy.
