A long-time supporter of the country, the EBRD claims to be Ukraine’s biggest institutional investor. Of the EBRD’s 40 debtors, Romania saw the biggest jump in borrowings during 2022. A big focus of the EBRD’s lending in the Balkan country is expanding local bank funding for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Much of the EBRD’s activities in central Asia’s biggest economy have been channelled into infrastructure, agribusiness and SMEs. One country to steadily slide down the EBRD’s loan book is Russia.
