Despite constantly self-congratulating themselves throughout the broadcast for having a more diverse list of nominees than any previous ceremony, Monday night’s Emmy Awards were, to put it simply, pretty white. But that’s also been the pattern of countless awards shows to date, where #____SoWhite becomes a trending hashtag shortly after the awards are handed out. Case in point: one hour into its lengthy ceremony, the show had yet to present a trophy to anyone of colour. Thompson sang, “We’re also celebrating the fact that this year’s Emmy Awards has the most diverse nominees in Emmy history. But even as Maisel swept, it should be remembered that it’s a show with an entirely white cast, much like Game of Thrones, which won Best Drama.
