Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power station as it was being readied in St. Petersburg earlier this year. Confronted with rising costs and limited land to build on, the companies planned to build nuclear power plants at a shipyard in Florida and then float them up to the New Jersey coast. Now the idea of floating nuclear plants is getting a new look. Interest in floating plants is rising as more developing and remote communities push toward electrification, and the struggling nuclear industry tries to build smaller plants. Another big step would be building plants large enough to produce gigawatts of power instead of the much smaller plants that have been the focus of floating nuclear power so far.
