Some of the atmospherics were deeply surreal—the video fans, the phony crowd noise on TV—but overall, the NBA’s plan was working, far better than expected. If you squinted from a distance, the basketball in the bubble looked fairly close to the real thing. But eventually the real world intervened, because the real world finds a way. Then the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee’s opponent, said no, they wouldn’t play, either.
