Sure: The NBA could build a plan, a protocol, a protective membrane against the coronavirus, and it could be doctor-approved, collectively bargained and rigorously installed. Some of the atmospherics were deeply surreal—the video fans, the phony crowd noise on TV—but overall, the NBA’s plan was working, far better than expected. If you squinted from a distance, the basketball in the bubble looked fairly close to the real thing. But eventually the real world intervened, because the real world finds a way. Then the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee’s opponent, said no, they wouldn’t play, either.
