Let’s be clear, the fury surrounding Serena Williams getting docked a point and then a game at the U.S. Open Women’s finals has almost nothing to do with tennis. The explosive reaction has everything to do with the way women are often punished and marginalized when men find us too aggressive, too loud, or too emotional. Last Saturday at the U.S. Open, fighting back tears, her voice tight and determined, Williams kept repeating, “This isn’t right. This is why so many women – even those who don’t follow tennis – felt burned by the umpire’s calls. Because like we see all too often in politics, women are held to a different standard – an unfair and often impossible one.
