Henry Kissinger and George Shultz are two of the most historically significant secretaries of State in the United States, and they were also fast friends. Kissinger and Shultz worked closely together during some of the most tumultuous years in American history. Kissinger was known for his realpolitik approach to diplomacy, while Shultz was a strong advocate for human rights. Shultz’s death in February 2021 was a great loss for Kissinger, who said in a statement: “George Shultz was a patriot whose life was devoted to America’s strength and to the defense of freedom. As we wish Kissinger a happy birthday, let us also honor the memory of George Shultz and the example that he and Kissinger set for us all.
