The British National Health Service (NHS) have launched their first contact tracing app for citizens of the Isle of Wight, an island off the southern coast of England. Yet that doesn’t help us standing as we are at the bottom of that mountain and with an urgent use-case such as contact tracing to analyse. Some firms have recognised that ethics needs governance, and have taken the step of creating Ethics Boards or Ethics Councils. And in this time of pandemic, following such an approach will be critical to ensure that contact tracing technology is widely adopted. But mandating use isn’t going to solve the techlash towards contact tracing – and given the emphasis on choice made in the West, ensuring a high-quality of governance is the only way to go.
