Many happily sated holidaymakers will have become aware over the extended Christmas season how much food is thrown away. The food waste charity Wrap estimates that 3.5 million mince pies were discarded in the festive season of 2017 and it is unlikely to have been much better this time around. Altogether 10.2 million tonnes of food is wasted every year in Britain. That is indefensible at a time when significant numbers of children go to school every day on empty stomachs.
