For a moment there it all got a bit confusing. Was Barry Gardiner stepping back from the royal family? In fact it was Gardiner, Labour’s shadow international trade secretary, who was bidding to replace Jeremy Corbyn. Things were complicated by the fact that he was in apparently in Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately news of the Gardiner campaign emerged just as everyone was busy wondering if it was possible for non-royals to separate from their own families too.
