When William Millsap heard that Amazon was going to show ads on its Prime streaming service unless he paid an extra $2.99 per month, he canceled his subscription. For years, streaming services kept themselves away from the trappings of cable television – the high bills, the glut of low-quality shows and channels, the constant commercials. Apple TV is one of the few streaming services that doesn't yet offer third-party ads. Proulx says the streaming advertising industry is young and needs to find more ways to innovate, such as static ads that appear when you pause a show. Louis Kappel and Sandra G. Bell charges a premium for all of its streaming services to avoid ads.
