The gentrification of Washington DC: how my city changed its colours


The last time I returned to Washington DC, I arrived as I usually do, by train into Union Station. I rep Washington DC – hard – despite not having really lived here since I graduated from high school, and despite spending the past few years working in Lagos. Facebook Twitter Pinterest Washington DC has seen the rise of a flourishing black community despite its history of segregation. My mother built her career in downtown Washington DC at the World Bank headquarters, close to the White House. Located on Varnum Street Northeast, Providence sat in a working-class black neighbourhood not far from the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
