Vinay Menon learned everything he knows about summer camp from films like Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. But in our house, summer camp was strictly a vicarious experience. And inside that lingering calculus, the idea of summer camp seemed as deranged as sending us into a coal mine. Similarly, I sometimes wonder how different I might be today had I gone to summer camp as a kid. Though “summer camp” has been a sub-genre in TV and film for more than a half-century — Meatballs, Indian Summer, The Parent Trap, Moonrise Kingdom, Camp Rock, Little Darlings, Ernest Goes to Camp, Space Camp, Wet Hot American Summer, Heavyweights, Gorp, Looking for Miracles, Camp Cucamonga — a screen is no substitute for life.
