The music might miss its mark, but Mirvish’s Matilda is a fast and slick production

Miss Trunchbull likes to invent misdeeds and then punish her pupils for committing them. It’s odd that, despite the build-up it’s given, her bookishness barely comes into play in defeating Miss Trunchbull. She turns out to have a double relationship with Miss Trunchbull that only makes sense if she’s a total idiot. Miss Trunchbull is the sadistic, sports-obsessed school principal to whose callous mercies the show’s five-year-old heroine is consigned by her hateful parents. Dan Chameroy, playing Miss Agatha Trunchbull in Matilda The Musical, brings something to the role and to the show that I never thought to see.
