The pandemic turbocharged the technology sector, but there was a school of thought that the boom would fade as we returned to the office and rebuilt our social lives. On Tuesday three of the world’s largest technology companies reported earnings that shocked even their most fervent disciples. Apple and Alphabet doubled their net income, while Microsoft increased its earnings by nearly 50 per cent. Together the trio raked in a record $57 billion of after-tax profit between April and June — or $630 million a day.
